CAYAD Otautahi is a service provided by Waipuna Youth and Community Services Trust.
Who We Are
CAYAD Otautahi is part of a national initiative that helps communities work towards reducing drug-related harm in youth. We do this by encouraging community ownership and increasing capacity to address this health issue.
The CAYAD Otautahi team is based in Christchurch/Otautahi, Canterbury, Aotearoa/New Zealand and comprises:
CAYAD was developed as a result of considerable community concern about illicit drugs, particularly as highlighted by the media, and the Ministry of Health’s commitment to reduce drug-related harm to young people and their communities.
The initial pilot CAYAD projects had been developed in 1997 (based on international evidence-based research and developed through local community action best practice).
Due to the positive results it was decided to role the provision of CAYAD services into other areas.
To reduce illicit drug related harm, the evidence indicates that the greatest potential for successful public health strategies is in developing a comprehensive and integrated community action approach.
Between 2003 and 2005 an additional 18 CAYAD sites were established, building on the learnings and experience gained from the original sites (five of which continue to operate, with a total of 27 sites still operational). These are a mix of rural and urban, based with public health units, local councils and Maori provider organisations.
To develop community action initiatives that aim to reduce drug-related harm in youth, and increase community ownership and capacity to address this health issue.
